When I obtained my Master of Science in Eletrotechnical Engineering in 1984, Gaston Geens was Minister President of the Flemish Government. I remember this very well because Gaston Geens was the father of Flanders’ Technology, a state sponsored initiative to encourage youngsters to be part of the Third Industrial Revolution. Visiting one of the Flanders’ Technology conferences, I was impressed by the multifold of application based on new technologies like personal computers, networks and robotics.
Today, roughly 25 years later, these technologies have become omni-present, but more important they have become the cornerstone for the strategy of many organizations and companies. That is why I accepted the proposal of www.ITprofessional.be to blog for their strategy oriented section. While blogging, I will share insights and ask your feedback on ICT technology as a core strategic capability. We will dive into questions such as “How can organizations tap the Global Brain?” or “In what does Wikinomics differ from standard economics?”.
An unexpected but important side effect of all that technological “violence” consists of the fact that our world has become more complex. People have become “empowered” through easy access to information, resulting in an acceleration in their decision taking process. On the other hand the internet has shrinked the world into a village where transaction costs have become minimal. The combination of decision speed and ease to transact has resulted in a world where complex change has become the standard. For this reason I will also focus on complexity. Question and topics to tackle are “How to develop strategy in a complex and rapidly changing world?” or “New spectacles to better recognize and deal with complexity”.
ITprofessional and I baptize this IT professional blog as “Technology, Complexity and Strategy” and hope this child will grow and prosper!
