When I obtained my Master of Science in Eletrotechnical Engineering in 1984, Gaston Geens was Minister President of the Flemish Government. I remember this very well because Gaston Geens was the father of Flanders’ Technology, a state sponsored initiative to encourage youngsters to be part of the Third Industrial Revolution. Visiting one of the Flanders’ Technology conferences, I was impressed by the multifold of application based on new technologies like personal computers, networks and robotics.

Complexity theory explains extreme events

Last year we have witnessed several "extreme events" in the financial world. Large financial institutions - even the ones labelled 'too big to fail' - saw their shareholder value melt like snow in the sun. The CxO's of these institutions were totally uncapable of stopping the process. They could only undergo the extreme events. Complexity theory can help CxO's to understand and make sense of these events.

Onze sociaaleconomische omgeving wordt regelmatig dooreen geschud door onverwachte gebeurtenissen. Telkens nemen politici en bedrijfsleiders brand-blus maatregelen. Niet efficiënt, noch effectief, meent de Koninklijke Vlaamse Ingenieursvereniging (KVIV). Politici en bedrijfsleiders moeten leren omgaan met “complexiteit”.
